Hello and welcome to my blog Biology needs Communicating! My name is Nicolina, I'm a future Master's student at the University of Sheffield.

For the most part, I'm just like many other aspiring biologists. There is something about nature and all its daring beauty that I just can't get enough of, and so I've chosen to learn more about it at a university level.
I love the way our world works, the mysteries behind genetics are something I like to read about in my spare time and I could never get tired of learning random animal facts, like the pink color of flamingo feathers is really just a byproduct of the food they eat.

But the reason I started this blog is what I think sets me apart from the rest, and that is my love for writing. From the the stories I would write as a grade-schooler to the scientific reports I'm more familiar with now, I've found a good narrative can go a long way if you have an important story to tell. With social media and journals being more accessible than ever, I think it's vital that scientists learn how to appeal to the general public and properly communicate ourselves, rather than letting others do the work for us. This blog is meant to be a form of personal practice, but also a way I can share my writing with anyone that's interested in what I cover.

THE CHALLENGE: each week I try and pick a random paper that catches my attention and write a short post about it. The point of the post is so that anyone (from your average Joe to other biology students like me) can read and understand a summary of what the paper is about.

So, dear reader, thank you for taking the time to read about me and what I aspire to do with this blog! I hope you learn as much as I do along the way.

Nicolina.
